Crane rental cost in Bakersfield: pricing guide
Typical ranges for operated crane rentals, based on published industry cost guides and typical California rate structures. Every job is quoted individually, so use these figures to budget and to sense-check quotes.
| Crane or crew | Typical rate with operator | Usual minimum or extras |
|---|---|---|
| Boom truck (up to about 20 ton) | $125 to $250 per hour | 2 to 4 hours |
| 25 to 40 ton hydraulic truck crane | $175 to $275 per hour | 4 hours |
| 50 to 90 ton hydraulic | $225 to $400 per hour | 4 hours |
| 100 to 300+ ton all-terrain | $3,000 to $12,000+ per day | 1 day, plus mobilization |
| Crawler crane | Weekly or monthly quotes | Mobilization often $10,000+ |
| Rigging crew | $90 to $150 per person per hour | 4 hours |
Ranges are indicative for 2026 and vary with demand, fuel and union or prevailing-wage requirements. Public works and many industrial jobs in California are prevailing-wage jobs, which raises labor rates.
What drives the price
- Capacity at radius: the weight times the distance decides the crane class, and bigger classes cost more per hour.
- Travel: many companies bill portal to portal, so a job in Ridgecrest or Tehachapi costs more than one in central Bakersfield.
- Setup: counterweight trucks, mats for soft or sandy ground, and assembly time on large cranes.
- Crew: extra riggers, a signal person or an oiler.
- Timing: overtime, weekend and night work cost more. Early morning lifts in summer are common, and usually at standard rates if they fall inside the shift.
- Permits and traffic control: street closures, flaggers and encroachment permits.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Bundle lifts so the crane does several in one visit.
- Have the load rigged and ready, the area cleared and the ground prepared before the crane arrives.
- Give accurate weights and distances, so you are not paying for a bigger crane "just in case".
- Ask whether a boom truck can do it instead.
